
Avondale Schools Announce 2024-2025 Teachers of The Year
Avondale School District is thrilled to announce the 2024-2025 Teachers of the Year! Each school within our district has selected an outstanding educator who exemplifies excellence in teaching, student engagement, and dedication to their school communities.
These exceptional teachers were nominated by the Avondale community, reflecting their impact and commitment to student success. Teachers were notified by surprise classroom visits from their building leaders, peers, students, and family.

Our district winners for High School, Middle School, Elementary, and the new Early Childhood categories will go on to represent Avondale in the Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards, an esteemed program that has recognized exceptional educators since 1987. This initiative, hosted by the Oakland Schools Education Foundation and Oakland Schools, celebrates four outstanding teachers across all levels.
The Oakland Schools selection committee, consisting of education professionals and community members, will review each district’s nominations and evaluate candidates based on a comprehensive rubric. The judging process will conclude in early March, and winners will be honored with surprise classroom visits. Finally, all nominees and awardees will be recognized at the annual Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Ceremony in May. Avondale will also honor all of its Teachers of the Year at a special Board Meeting in May.

Avondale High School: Garrick Baker, CTE Instructor
A dedicated and innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructor, Mr. Baker has profoundly impacted students by fostering a hands-on, real-world learning environment that prepares them for success beyond the classroom. Whether guiding students through engineering design, building trades, robotics, or architecture, he ensures that every lesson is engaging, practical, and applicable to future careers. His commitment to student success is evident in the way he encourages creativity, critical thinking, and perseverance, creating a learning space where students feel inspired to push boundaries and explore new ideas. Through field trips to industry sites, mentorship, and independent projects, he provides students with the confidence and skills necessary to thrive in competitive fields.

As an advisor for the National Honor Society and the newly established National Technical Honor Society, he fosters academic excellence and community service among his students. Avondale Middle School: Dr. Becky Spinks, Science Teacher
Known for her engaging, student-centered approach, Dr. Becky Spinks fosters a classroom environment where curiosity thrives, collaboration is encouraged, and every learner feels valued. Her dynamic lessons incorporate movement, music, and hands-on activities that make science exciting and accessible. One student shared how they had never enjoyed science before, but now eagerly look forward to class each day, thanks to Dr. Spinks’ enthusiasm and ability to connect with her students. Whether leading creative experiments like the Turkey Transporter challenge or using interactive pair-up activities, she ensures that every student is actively engaged in their learning journey.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Spinks serves as a mentor, leader, and advocate for both students and staff. As Teacher in Charge, she steps up in administrative roles when needed and plays a key role in professional development, sharing her expertise in curriculum design and instructional strategies. R. Grant Graham Elementary: Denise Gahry-Delie, Elementary Teacher
Ms. Denise Gahry-Delie is a dedicated educator who has consistently gone above and beyond to foster an environment where students feel engaged, challenged, and supported. Known for her calm demeanor and proactive leadership, Ms. Gahry-Delie motivates her students to take risks in their learning by using diverse teaching strategies like Visible Thinking routines, Leader in Me, and hands-on science experiments. She spearheaded the Clinton River Watershed Testing program, organizing students and volunteers to gather scientific data and educate others on environmental preservation. Her commitment to providing exceptional learning opportunities is evident in her dedication to differentiated instruction, ensuring that every student’s academic needs are met through targeted support and flexible strategies.
Ms. Gahry-Delie’s expertise extends beyond her own classroom, where she has played an instrumental role in developing school-wide programs such as the accelerated 5th to 6th-grade math program and the upper elementary math and reading intervention program. Her knowledge of curriculum development, paired with her continual professional growth—including pursuing an ESL endorsement and participating in various teaching certifications—makes her an invaluable resource to both students and colleagues. Avondale Early Learning Center: Kendall Kleinhans, Preschool
Miss. Kendell Kleinhans is a remarkable preschool teacher whose dedication to her students has left a lasting impact on the Avondale Early Learning Center community. With 14 years of teaching experience, Miss. Kendell goes beyond the expected, ensuring her lessons are engaging and cater to the unique needs of each child. She builds strong relationships with her students, encouraging them to stretch their thinking while actively participating in their daily routines. Kendell skillfully differentiates her instruction, using scaffolding techniques and open-ended questions to foster growth and problem-solving, while ensuring every student feels supported and valued.
As the first-ever recipient of the Early Childhood Teacher of the Year award, Miss. Kendell’s commitment to her students, colleagues, and community stands out. Her continuous pursuit of professional development, including seeking out Spanish training to better serve her diverse classroom, demonstrates her dedication to lifelong learning. Miss. Kendell’s ability to create a safe, welcoming classroom environment where children feel heard and respected is key to her success. She is not only a compassionate teacher but also a leader in her program, offering mentorship and support to colleagues. Auburn Elementary: Stephanie Moore, Kindergarten
Known for her dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to student success, Ms. Stephanie Moore has transformed the learning experience for countless children. Parents and colleagues alike praise her ability to create a nurturing, supportive classroom environment where students feel seen, valued, and encouraged to thrive. Deerfield Elementary: Emily Akers, Transitional Kindergarten
Emily Akers, Deerfield Elementary's Teacher of the Year, is celebrated for her exceptional ability to engage, support, and inspire her students in Transitional Kindergarten. With a passion for fostering curiosity and creativity, Mrs. Akers creates an environment where young learners thrive. She connects with each child on a personal level, recognizing their unique strengths and interests, as demonstrated by her encouragement of one student's love for drawing and 80s movies. By blending hands-on learning, social skills development, and individualized instruction, Mrs. Akers ensures that all her students feel seen, valued, and motivated to learn.

She actively participates in the PTO, fosters morale through staff events, and goes above and beyond to support both her students and their families. GATE (Elementary): Joel Tossey, Physical Education
Mr. Joel Tossey has proven himself to be an exceptional educator, deeply committed to creating an engaging, supportive environment for his students. In his role as the 2nd-8th grade PE teacher at GATE, he goes above and beyond to engage students by building personal connections with each of them, greeting them by name during arrival, and establishing a respectful, comfortable atmosphere where they feel valued. His ability to create a safe space for open discussions, particularly in his Health classes, allows students to confidently address sensitive topics. This thoughtful approach, paired with his high expectations for student success, fosters both personal growth and academic achievement.
Beyond his work with students, Mr. Tossey is a dedicated team player who collaborates with colleagues and actively engages with the school community. He communicates effectively with parents and takes part in various school events, including co-hosting Open Gym with the PTO. His commitment to both his students’ well-being and his professional growth is clear through his continued support for his peers and his consistent efforts to improve his own practice. Mr. Tossey is a respected role model and leader, known for his integrity, dedication, and positive influence on both students and the school community.
Woodland Elementary: Allison Neal, Transitional Kindergarten
Mrs. Allison Neal is an exceptional educator who demonstrates a deep commitment to both her students and her profession. In the classroom, she excels at engaging her students by fostering a warm and welcoming environment where every child feels valued. Her passion for literacy, backed by a master's degree in Literacy Studies, is evident as she provides differentiated instruction tailored to the individual needs of each student. Whether challenging advanced learners or collaborating with intervention and special education teams, Mrs. Neal ensures that all her students receive the support they need to succeed. Her ability to connect with her students through age-appropriate strategies and consistently positive reinforcement makes learning both accessible and exciting.
Beyond her classroom, Mrs. Neal is a respected member of the Woodland staff and a dedicated leader within the school community. She actively participates in the PBIS/Positivity Project Committee and is a valuable contributor to the district’s Career Development Team. Mrs. Neal's communication with parents is exemplary, always keeping them informed with clear, timely updates on their child's progress.
